Abstract

Hypertension is a dangerous non-communicable disease that can be life threatening. Based on data on the prevalence of hypertension in Indonesia according to the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia, there are 65,048,110 people (34.1%). The causes of high cases of hypertension are unhealthy lifestyles, such as unhealthy diets such as fast food, not doing regular exercise, and unhealthy habits. Handling with pharmacological therapy consists of administering antihypertensive drugs which require regular time, taking into account the place, mechanism of action and level of compliance. We can do non-pharmacological therapy by managing a healthy diet and reducing excessive salt consumption. One of them is providing counseling about the DASH diet (Dietary Approach to Stop Hypertension).

The DASH (Dietary Approach to Stop Hypertension) diet is a form of non-pharmacological therapy for hypertension in the form of a daily diet that is high in fiber and low in fat. The targets in this service are families who live with hypertensive elderly, namely in the working area of the Kutalimbaru Health Center, Kab. Deli Serdang with 31 participants. The team visited elderly homes to educate families and the elderly. Before and after conducting family-based education the team gave a questionnaire. The results of the dedication show that there is an increase in knowledge, namely the majority understand as much as 64.52%, in the working area of the Kutalimbaru Health Center, Kab. Deli Serdang. The results of this activity are expected to increase family knowledge and awareness in caring for elderly hypertension so as to avoid complications
