Abstract

Fracture is a condition characterized by a break in the continuity of bone, either total or partial, depending on its type and extent. Postoperative fracture management generally involves pain resulting from surgical incisions, which cause tissue damage and disruption of continuity, leading to discomfort and pain in patients. Pain management has been implemented by the hospital; however, additional non-pharmacological pain management is needed to enhance the effectiveness of pain control in postoperative patients, particularly those undergoing fracture surgery.

This study aimed to determine the effect of finger-hold relaxation techniques and back massage on pain levels in postoperative fracture patients at RSU Sundari Medan. The research design used was a pre-quasi experimental study with a one-group pretest–posttest design. The study population consisted of all postoperative fracture patients hospitalized at RSU Sundari Medan, with a sample of 20 patients selected using accidental sampling. Data were collected using a checklist, and data analysis was performed using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test.

The results showed a significant effect of finger-hold relaxation techniques and back massage on reducing pain levels in postoperative fracture patients at RSU Sundari Medan (p = 0.000).

Conclusion: Non-pharmacological interventions, particularly finger-hold relaxation therapy and back massage, are effective in reducing pain levels in postoperative fracture patients. Therefore, the implementation of non-pharmacological pain management interventions is recommended as part of nursing care for pain reduction in hospitalized patients.
